The Astronaut's Room
One bedroom, two brothers, four years between them. Every fitted-bedroom quote the parents received solved the storage and ignored the fact that the boys wanted to be in there together.

- Scope
- Interior architecture, joinery, mural
- Area
- 18 sqm
- Duration
- 3 months
Problem
- 01 18 sqm asked to hold two beds, two desks and two wardrobes
- 02 A four-year age gap, and no shared ground between them
- 03 Bunk ladders the parents did not trust
Design Approach
The joinery was drawn as a little building rather than as furniture: a gable over the media wall, a cane-fronted wardrobe reading as a chimney, and a bunk reached by a run of boxed steps instead of a ladder — every tread is also a drawer, which is where the storage the brief asked for actually went. The way down is a slide on the opposite side, which is the only part of the brief the brothers wrote themselves. Sage green and natural cane keep it calm enough that the room will still work when the older one is fifteen.
Result

- hidden inside the stair to the top bunk
- 7 drawers hidden inside the stair to the top bunk
- anywhere in the room
- No ladder anywhere in the room
- holding two of everything, and floor left to play on
- 18 sqm holding two of everything, and floor left to play on
“They asked for a rocket ship. We asked for something we would not have to rip out in five years. Somehow both happened.”
A room built like a small house, for two people who are still growing.
